In 2020, our Founder, Sarah Cipkar, built her own 430 sqft backyard home in Windsor, Ontario. Having had no prior experience in development or construction, she took it upon herself to engage with the process, learn all that she could, and advocate for the outcome that she thought was best for her property and surrounding neighbourhood. Because no one knew how to navigate the process, she had to play a key role in the entire construction of this detached additional dwelling unit.

There was not a strong economic case for this build (according to the financial institutions that denied the lending approval), and she was reminded of the risk in taking on this project. No one had built a home in the neighbourhood in many decades, let alone a laneway home. As it was the first in the city, and one of the first in the province, she knew that it couldn’t be this hard, or more homeowners wouldn’t do it. This is the raison d’être of Resimate.
